GROUNDNUTS PROCESSING
Groundnuts are grown in parts of Tanzania below 1,500 m altitude. The most important growing regions are Dodoma,
Mtwara, Tabora, Shinyanga, Kigoma and Mwanza. The two main groundnut growing zones have different rainfall
amounts and in distribution during the growing season.
Dodoma region is an agricultural economy region, one of the main crops being groundnuts with an estimated
average production of 240,000 tons per annum. Main input in groundnut production is seeds, usually grown
without application of fertilizers. It is grown entirely under rain fed condition as intercrops with cereals,
cassava or other crops. Increased production and improved marketing of groundnut oil creates a substantial
opportunity for increased income and improved welfare of small farmers. Groundnut oil is relatively easy to
produce with a small investment into machinery. Groundnut oil is excellent for human use as is low in
cholesterol and increased production of groundnut oil and groundnut products reduces the dependency of
imported vegetable oil.
